Brass bands unite for weekend of 'magic'

20 June 2016

The North American Brass Celebration brought together five of the best Salvation Army brass bands in a weekend of concerts and gospel witness.

Five of Canada and Northern America’s best Salvation Army Brass Bands marched down the main street of Disneyland as part of the North American Brass Celebration. Thousands of people witnessed the celebratory massed band marching with flags unfurled as they brought a gospel witness to the “most magical place on earth”.

The Canadian Staff Band, the Western Territory Staff Band, the Chicago Staff Band, the New York Staff Band and the Southern Territorial Band gathered in Los Angeles, performing at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center.

The weekend event, in honour of the Western Territory Staff Band’s 10th anniversary, began on Friday, with an eight-hour rehearsal, preparing for the festivities. Concerts by the territorial and divisional youth bands of the USA Western Territory kicked off the weekend on Saturday morning, followed by an afternoon concert, with each guest band bringing an energetic 30-minute performance. A celebration concert was held in the evening.

On Sunday morning, the bands led meetings at various corps. Canadian Territorial Commander, Commissioner Susan McMillan, and the CSB led worship at Torrance Corps. A Canadian couple, who went to the service to hear the band, rededicated their lives to the Lord, and made the decision to return to church at Torrance Corps.
