Week 1 - Using Self Denial Appeal resources

2 March 2022

Following this morning’s reflection, take a moment to re-read the Scripture passage from 1 Corinthians chapter 1, verses 18-25.

18 The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God. 19 As the Scriptures say, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.” 20 So, where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish. 21 Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe. 22 It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from Heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom. 23 So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended, and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense. 24 But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength.

Consider

Revelation
•
What basic truth does it teach?

Conviction
• How does this challenge me?
• How does this correct, balance and direct me?

Action
• What does this Scripture lead me to change within me?
•
How is the Lord leading and loving me as I plan to act on this Scripture?

Prayer
Lord, help me to comprehend the power of the cross.
May my gift enable the preaching of the cross where the need is great.
For your love’s sake, Amen.

Prayer points: The international Salvation Army
•

Introduce the Self Denial Appeal by telling the children that every year The Salvation Army has a special appeal to raise money to help make a difference in people’s lives in other countries.

Watch
Play Week 1 video ‘The Ripple Effect’ (2 minutes 41 seconds). Click here here and scroll down to the videos section to find the ‘Kids videos’

Read
After watching the video, read the cartoon in the Self-Denial magazine, meeting the Kidzone characters who will take you through the next six weeks of the appeal. Do the rebus puzzle together to discover the important message hidden in the clues. Read the information about the appeal (Heading: ‘Hey Everyone!’) and what the theme ‘The Ripple Effect’ means. Talk about how the money they raise can make a big difference to others’ lives, even though it might seem only a small amount. Show the children the world map and point out the places where the SDA will be helping to make a difference in people’s lives.

Make
Help each child make their own Self Denial money box using your pre-ordered cardboard sheets or by downloading a template here (You’ll find a resources tab at the bottom of the Self Denial website.

Write
Brainstorm some fundraising ideas with the children and write them down in the space provided.

Do
Finish off by reading the memory verse, Ephesians chapter 3, verses 20-21, together.

Watch the Self Denial video on Others on Sunday at 9.30am.
