Week 2 - Using Self Denial Appeal resources

2 March 2022

Following this morning’s reflection, take a moment to re-read the Scripture passage from Mark chapter 6, verses 31-44

31 Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat. 32 So they left by boat for a quiet place, where they could be alone. 33 But many people recognised them and saw them leaving, and people from many towns ran ahead along the shore and got there ahead of them. 34 Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. 35 Late in the afternoon his disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. 36 Send the crowds away so they can go to the nearby farms and villages and buy something to eat.” 37 But Jesus said, “You feed them.” “With what?” they asked. “We’d have to work for months to earn enough money to buy food for all these people!” 38 “How much bread do you have?” he asked. “Go and find out.” They came back and reported, “We have five loaves of bread and two fish.” 39 Then Jesus told the disciples to have the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of fifty or a hundred. 41 Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward Heaven and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people. He also divided the fish for everyone to share. 42 They all ate as much as they wanted, 43 and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftover bread and fish. 44 A total of 5000 men and their families were fed.

Consider

Revelation
• What basic truth does it teach?
Conviction
• How does this challenge me?
• How does this correct, balance and direct me?
Action
• What does this Scripture lead me to change within me?
• How is the Lord leading and loving me as I plan to act on this Scripture?

Prayer
Lord, move my heart with the needs of your mission, then move my will to do something worthwhile towards meeting them.
For your love’s sake, Amen.

Children’s resources

This guide is based on the Self Denial Appeal children’s magazine. Find it here

Introduction
Ask the children to remember what the Self Denial Appeal is all about. Show them Cousin Koala’s speech bubble in Week 2: “The money raised in the Self Denial Appeal helps to keep many corps and churches open to share the love of Jesus with others in different ways that the community needs.” Chat about any ideas they have had to raise money to put into their self denial money boxes. Say the memory verse, Ephesians 3:20-21, together (Week 1 of the magazine).

Watch
The Week 2 Self Denial video, ‘Corps Ministry’ (Self Denial Appeal 2022), under the kids’ videos tab.

Read
Look at the three sections on Ecuador, Ukraine, and Greenland. Read out ‘This week we’re visiting Greenland, Ecuador and Ukraine’. Introduce Kidzone character Traveller, who regularly appears in the weekly Kidzone magazine visiting different countries to give interesting facts about the place she’s in. This week she’s visiting Greenland (page 9) – read out loud (or ask a child to read out) the information about Greenland.

Make
Activities for this week are the balloon timbrel with Kidzone’s crafty character Oliver (page 8) or cooking the veggie empanadas with Cheffy (page 7). If your premises doesn’t have appropriate cooking facilities, or your time is limited, consider pre-cooking some empanadas for the children to try. After making these fun timbrels, read the message in the green box (‘Hey crafty crew’) – then play a song on your phone for the children to play along with using their timbrels.

Do
Fill out the worksheet on page 9. Have your phone or device ready to show the children what the Greenlandic flag looks like.

Pray
Thank you, God, that The Salvation Army has 14,000 corps worldwide, including the corps in Greenland, Ecuador, and Ukraine. Thank you that many people around the world will be helped by the money raised for the Self Denial Appeal. Amen
