Week 6 - Using Self Denial Appeal resources

30 March 2022

Following this morning’s reflection, take a moment to re-read the Scripture passage from 2 Corinthians 9:6-15.

6 Remember this, a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. 7 You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” 8 And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. 9 As the Scriptures say, “They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever.”  10 For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you. 11 Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God. 12 So two good things will result from this ministry of giving – the needs of the believers in Jerusalem will be met, and they will joyfully express their thanks to God. 13 As a result of your ministry, they will give glory to God. For your generosity to them and to all believers will prove that you are obedient to the Good News of Christ. 14 And they will pray for you with deep affection because of the overflowing grace God has given to you. 15 Thank God for this gift too wonderful for words!

Consider

Revelation
What basic truth does it teach?
Conviction
How does this challenge me?
How does this correct, balance and direct me?
Action
What does this piece of scripture lead me to change within me?
How is the Lord leading and loving me as I plan to act on this scripture?
Prayer
Dear Lord, as I join with thousands of others in the ministry of giving on Self Denial Sunday, please accept my offering. May the gifts of your people create a ripple of blessing which will encircle the world and enrich every nation where the Army serves. For your love’s sake, Amen.

Prayer points: The South Pacific and East Asia Zone

  • Medical work including hospitals, nursing academies, and clinics in the Indonesian Territory.
  • Continued growth in the Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands Territory, where the Army cannot keep up with calls to begin new openings.
  • Bethany and Joyville children’s homes, and community development projects throughout the Philippines Territory.
  • Children’s homes, daycare centres, medical clinics, and integrated community livelihood development programs in Myanmar (Singapore, Malaysia and Myanmar Territory).
  • The Hong Kong and Macau Command as it faces political upheaval. Pray especially for the corps, schools and educational services.

Children’s resources

This guide is based on the Self Denial Appeal children’s magazine. Find it here

Introduction
Ask the children what they remember about the Self Denial Appeal from last week. Remind them what a ripple effect is – how when you drop a stone into water it creates circles around it. The Self Denial Appeal is like that stone ... the money we give (SDA) creates ripples of good as the money is used to help people all around the world.

Say the memory verse, Ephesians 3:20-21, together (week one of the magazine).

Collect the children’s Self Denial money boxes. Chat to them about the special things they may have done to raise money to put into their boxes. Thank them and pray: thank God for their money and that he will use this money to help people around the world. (Obviously, this depends on what individual corps have planned for their SDA wrap up).

Read
Look at the comic together, which explains what the children will see in the video. Say Cousin Koala’s prayer.
Watch
The Week 6 Self Denial video, ‘wrap up’ (Self Denial Appeal 2022) (2 minutes 19 seconds) under the kids’ videos tab.
Ask them what they’ve learnt about the Self Denial Appeal and The Salvation Army over the past few weeks.
Do
Have a go at the different puzzles on the puzzle pages.
Pray
Dear God, thank you that The Salvation Army shows love and care for people around the world. Thank you for everyone here who has put money in their Self Denial money boxes to help others.
