On 12 December 1964, Lionel married Maisie Haning (dec. 2008) who had entered officer training as a cadet the previous year. They were blessed with two children – Jo-Anne and Robert. After Commissioning, Lieutenant Lionel was appointed to the Hillcrest Corps in South Australia.

Lionel served Jesus in the following appointments: Thebarton Corps (SA) in 1966, Collie Corps (WA) in 1967 and Geraldton Corps (WA) in 1969, Kadina Corps (SA) in 1971, followed by a succession of Victorian corps including Warrnambool in 1973, Geelong West in 1976, Ballarat Central in 1977, Mildura in 1979, Bentleigh in 1981, Springvale in 1985, Weeroona Retirement Village in 1989, before serving at Sunset Lodge in South Australia in 1992.

Lionel’s last appointment was as Chaplain and Pastoral Care Officer in 1992. He retired in December 1995.

In retirement, Lionel and Maisie moved to Noosa to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren.
