Famine in Africa, terrorist attacks, climate change, data security, human trafficking, homelessness – these contemporary issues are part of the daily landscape of the world we live in.

It’s easy to be overwhelmed by such issues of injustice and the ethical dilemmas that surround us, and we wonder if we can make a positive difference.

Salvo Academy, started by the Social Justice Department in the Australia Eastern Territory, is creating opportunities for Salvationists engage with a range of topics that challenge and concern us both personally and globally.

How The Salvation Army responds at a national and global level to current contemporary issues will be the focus of the next Salvo Academy to be held on Tuesday 6 June (7pm-9pm).

“Our goal as a social justice department is to inspire people, where they are, to work for the world they want to see unfold,” says Casey O’Brien Machado, Territorial Social Justice Coordinator for the Australia Eastern Territory.

“Salvo Academy is one way to help people think through the issues and have an informed opinion and a way they can move forward as individuals and with others.”

Lieutenant-Colonel Geanette Seymour, former Director of the International Social Justice Commission and former Chair of the International Moral and Social Issues Council, will be one of the presenters on the night.

The night will focus on how The Salvation Army addresses contemporary issues including the role of The Salvation Army’s moral and social issues council, the purpose of its positional statements, and how Salvationists can respond in their daily lives and communities.

Salvo Academy is run in partnership with Stanmore House in Sydney, where the event is held and live-streamed to campuses at Carindale Corps in Brisbane, and Tuggeranong Corps in Canberra. Listeners at all campuses are enabled to join in the conversation.
