The Salvation Army Emergency Services (SAES) teams in the Hunter have been busy at the scene of a bushfire that threatened houses in the Port Stephens area.

SAES crews were activated on Thursday to assist with the feeding of firefighters and other emergency services personnel fighting to contain a fire at Campvale, in the Port Stephens area north of Newcastle.

On that same day, two evacuation centres opened at Raymond Terrace and Nelsons Bay at which SAES personnel served meals and refreshments. The next day, another two evacuation centres opened.

“Our volunteers have been absolutely amazing,” said Hans Schryver, SAES Regional Operations Coordinator. “Even when it’s the weekend, volunteers were calling and saying, ‘Can I help?’… They’re people who are so open to helping the community, helping in emergency services.”

The evacuation centres were all closed by Friday evening, but The Salvation Army remained at the staging area of the fireground, serving just over 2000 meals before completing the call-out after lunch on Sunday.

Hans Schryver said the community support was great, with many businesses donating supplies. He said it’s times like emergencies, when The Salvation Army’s presence in the community is really felt.

“We’re serving the community by being there, helping them, having a listening ear and when questions are asked about The Salvation Army, we can answer them.

“It’s wonderful how wearing a uniform or a shirt with The Salvation Army logo, people will come to you and talk to you,” he said. “They want to know why we do it. And it’s because we love Jesus, we love God … and because we are a part of an organisation that loves community.”
