COVID-19: Donaldsons unite Salvos behind national prayer campaign

The Salvation Army's Australia Territory Leaders have called for prayer during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Commissioners Janine and Robert Donaldson have encouraged Salvos across Australia to join a national prayer initiative prompted by the COVID-19 crisis.

The National Council of Churches in Australia (NCAA) has sent a letter to Australian church leaders, inviting them to unite in prayer amid the rising incidence of COVID-19 infection. The letter encourages “all our Christian brothers, sisters and friends to take up this offer”.

The NCCA President, Bishop Philip Huggins, has made the following suggestions: Invite our people to pray at 7pm every day until Easter; make a particular focus of Prayer for the Nations amid COVID-19 on Sunday 29 March.

“Janine and I support this important initiative and we encourage Salvos to join with other Christians across the country in prayer,” said Commissioner Robert Donaldson. “This is gaining good traction across many churches, not just those in NCAA.”

The NCAA has also written a specific prayer in response to the crisis. It reads:

Gracious God,

We give thanks anew for your providence and presence.
We prayerfully seek your grace, amidst COVID-19 here and overseas.
We pray for those in need of healing.
We pray for your peace with those who are anxious or grieving.
We pray you will continue to strengthen and sustain all those who are serving in response.
We pray for your Holy Spirit’s discernment amidst the many choices and decisions facing our national community and medical leaders.
We pray we each might see quickly what more we can do to help those who are vulnerable.
This prayer for our nation in the family of nations, with all that is on our hearts, we gather now and pray through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen
