Retired Australian Football League player and coach Nathan Buckley fell just shy of winning Channel 10’s reality television show 'I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!', finishing third behind country music singer Brooke McClymont and eventual ‘King of the Jungle’, broadcaster Dylan Lewis.

Nathan, who nominated The Salvation Army as his charity of choice to receive any money he won on the show, said he “loved every minute” of the experience. Had he won, the Army would have received $100,000, which Nathan earmarked for use by Melbourne’s Project 614.

In the finale aired live last night, Nathan said he had made lifelong friendships from his experience on the show that was “designed to test us” and “reveal the purest version of ourselves”.

Broadcaster Dylan Lewis, the winner of season eight of ‘I’m a Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here!’. Fellow top-six finalist, swimmer Emily Seebohm, described Nathan as caring and selfless.

The other contestants to make the final six for the finale were country music singer Brooke McClymont, ‘non-celebrity’ David Subritzky and British reality star Joey Essex. It was a viewer vote that decided the eventual winner.

Nathan described Dylan as having been creative, with a “kid-like playfulness” but competitive: “I really liked his energy,” he said.

Dylan’s chosen charity was Lifeline.

As part of the eighth season of the program, the contestants were dropped into a ‘jungle’ setting and subjected to a range of tests involving coming face to face with various creatures, including snakes and spiders, eating strange food, doused with various substances, jumping from a helicopter, and battling hunger. The least competitive in the challenges was ejected.

During the program, which was filmed in September last year in bush near Murwillumbah (NSW), former National Rugby League player Beau Ryan became the first contestant to say the phrase, “I’m a celebrity ... get me out of here”, and left the show without being ejected.

The show began with 13 contestants who, apart from Beau, were gradually eliminated. Until the finale, those ejected were retired AFL player Derek Kickett, MasterChef contestant Poh Ling Yeow, singer Totti Goldsmith, beauty contestant Maria Thattil, comedian Cal Wilson, and reality TV contestant Davina Rankin.
