The 10-year anniversary of the Fraser Island fishing trip was a great week of mateship and creating memories to last a lifetime, according to organiser Major Bryce Davies.

“I had about half a dozen significant conversations with guys that wouldn’t have happened in my normal ministry space,” said Bryce, Faith Communities Development Coordinator. “Topics included marriage, retirement, health and relating to their children. So, they were really consequential.”

This particular men’s ministry activity is designed to develop faith and relationship pathways.

In the first week of August, 12 men set out in four-wheel drives with their fishing rods for a week of camping, fishing and conversation.

“Home from Fraser Island, and one of the toughest weeks for me, testing all my fears,” said Andy, one of the ‘regulars’. “Thanks to all the boys on the trip, who made it easy for me to have a holiday I will never forget.” Andy has health issues that require a carer to accompany him.

John, 87, provided wisdom in entertaining ways, including wading into the pounding surf in pursuit of fish for dinner.

Josh travelled from Sydney to be a part of the trip. He said he was “just glad to be there with everyone” because he is usually socially isolated.

“Having the time and space over seven days really creates a bond,” Bryce said. “Even though it’s hard, it’s inspirational to see guys like Andy, Josh and John grinning from ear to ear. Then it’s not so hard.”
