Territorial Leaders to take up new post

14 November 2022

Commissioners Janine and Robert Donaldson have led the Australia Territory since mid-2019.

Territorial Leaders Commissioners Janine and Robert Donaldson will take up new appointments on 1 February 2023 after leading The Salvation Army Australia through the first three years as a united territory.

Lieutenant-Colonel Miriam Gluyas will assume territorial leadership, with the promotion to the rank of commissioner, serving as the Territorial Commander. Miriam has been the NSW/ACT Divisional Commander for the past seven years.

The Donaldsons have been appointed by International Headquarters (IHQ) as the General’s Representatives for Mission Effectiveness, a pilot project.

“This Australia-based appointment will provide coaching and mentoring support to senior leaders and teams across various territories and aims to assist with issues preventing the realisation of full mission potential,” Robert said.

The Donaldsons arrived in Australia in July 2019 to lead the newly united territory and embed the Australia One strategy across the nation. On 1 December 2018, The Salvation Army became a unified movement in Australia after operating as two independent territories (Australia Eastern and Australia Southern) for 97 years.

The objective of bringing the two former territories together was to have an aligned vision, united voice, greater impact, increased innovation, stronger partnerships and better stewardship for the communities the Army serves across Australia.

After three years of service, they finish their appointment with the confidence that the season ahead will be one of consolidation under Miriam’s leadership.

“Miriam is well-known and loved by many across the territory, having served The Salvation Army for almost 40 years in various appointments, from church planting, multicultural ministry, youth and children’s ministry, Chief Secretary in Papua New Guinea and Divisional Commander of NSW/ACT,” Robert said. “Miriam loves God and people and is committed to seeing lives transformed across our nation.”

Miriam said she was looking forward to leading the territory.

“I am immensely grateful to both Janine and Robert for their leadership and kindness over these days,” she said. “What a journey it has been! So many wonderful stories of what God is up to and so many more to come. These are urgent and exciting days. How I thank God for you! Big gospel. Big God. Believing with you for a magnificent future as we continue the journey together. Faith and hope are rising.”

Miriam will be officially installed as the Territorial Commander at Melbourne Project 614 Corps on Sunday 12 February.

Commissioners Janine and Robert Donaldson will be officially farewelled in a special online service on Thursday 15 December from 1pm. To register, click here
