The latest film by Stephen Spielberg is families all the way, with an emphasis on older teens. Watch the 60 Second Verdict of Ready Player One.

SUMMARY

It’s 2045 and Wade Watts is a teenager more alive online than he can ever hope to be in the real world. The most popular past-time in his 21st-century slum is the Oasis – a virtual reality game where people like Wade can not only do anything but be anyone. When the creator of the game offers to give his empire to whoever can solve his online puzzle, Wade has a chance to change his life for real – but there are corporate hackers who also have their eye on those trillions of dollars.

WHAT’S GOOD

Incredible special effects and a wonderful trip down Nostalgia Lane for those who grew up in the 1980s.

WHAT’S NOT

The tacit approval of electronic escapism – understandable in terms of the plot, but still a real problem for teens today who see games and social networks as the only attractive way of spending time.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

In a world where we’re escaping online, Ready Player One reminds us we have to be honest about ourselves if we want real relationships. Not just with each other, but with God. You might be able to ace a game, you might even be able to fool Facebook, but you can’t kid your Creator.

Ready Player One is rated M and opens in cinemas on March 29.
