God’s Amazing Protection is a self-published memoir covering the life and ministry of New Zealand Salvation Army officer Major Peter Scadden.
The events included appointments in Congo-Brazzaville, Fiji, Malawi, Pakistan, Rwanda, Tonga, Zambia and his country of origin. It is a comparatively short book of 80 pages with several photographs of people and locations.
Although it lacks a contextual and theoretical discussion on locations, people and missionary service during the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the memoir uncovers recent stories on Salvation Army and international history that would be unfamiliar to many readers.
Peter shows the dangerous side of ministering as a missionary, having firearms pointed at him, being a witness in the case of the Pakistan territorial commander Colonel Bo Brekke’s murder, working against corruption and offering assistance after civil war, genocide and earthquakes. While the author was clear that such events led to his post-traumatic stress disorder, he believes God showed amazing protection.
This memoir would interest readers looking for a succinct and honest narrative of modern missionary services.
