Xuan Le’s rendition of the Easter story is beautiful, but has a pivotal inaccuracy.
The beauty of Xuan Le’s Easter story is not simply that it transcends generations but that it is available to everyone.
As I walked through Target, the last book I expected to see was a retelling of the Holy Week, but, in The Easter Story, we are provided with a child-friendly, accessible and colourful rendition of Christ’s sacrifice for us.
This is a quick and easy read for a child or parent, and focuses on the events from Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey, to his ascension. All the major ‘plot’ points are hit – from turning tables in the temple to the Last Supper and Christ’s appearance to Mary after he rose from the dead.
That being said, there was a moment the theology made me pause. It states that Christ was only in the tomb overnight. It’s rather odd, especially considering the story affirms the Biblical truth of Christ’s identity, death and resurrection. This can be somewhat overcome if a parental figure reads the book with the child, but you’ll want to page through it first.
