The Anglican Church has a rich tradition in preparing for the celebration of Easter, and this book of Lenten studies is a helpful guide for Christians of all denominations.

Retired Anglican Bishop Reg Piper has a doctorate in theology, yet he writes in plain language. The 40 daily readings each contain a Bible reference, a reflection and a prayer. The theme throughout is the peace we can know in Christ, and Day 32 contains this observation from a first-century writer, Epictetus: “While the Emperor may give peace from war on land and sea ... he cannot give peace of heart, for which man yearns more than even outward peace.”

More frequent personal illustrations and greater life application would have improved the book, but additional questions are included in the appendix for readers who want to delve deeper, or for Bible study groups.

If you are looking for a guide to navigate Lent and meditate on him this season, this devotional is a good start.

The Things That Make For Peace is available at Koorong.
