Book Review: To Hell with the Hustle by Jefferson Bethke

Author Jefferson Bethke (depicted left) uses illustrations from his family life and walk with God to highlight the important of giving up the ‘hustle’.

I doubt Jefferson Bethke could have anticipated the relevance and importance of his text for the challenges people are facing in 2020.

To Hell with the Hustle encourages readers to consider taking things slower, saying no to the constant pressure to be better and achieve more, and spending more time in silence with God.

Bethke bases these calls to action of Jesus’ own life, and while Biblical interaction could be more forthcoming, the general message is clear: God wants us to slow down and to live for him, not for a bigger house, larger income or higher status.

Instead of setting ‘goals’ for our lives, Bethke calls us to consider what transformations we want to experience to become more Christ-like. When the world has been forced to stop and reassess, To Hell with the Hustle is an encouragement to Christians that perhaps slowing down is exactly what God ordered.

To Hell With The Hustle is available at Koorong and major bookstores.

Elizabeth Little is a school teacher in Melbourne.
