Music Review: Unified by the Amsterdam Staff Band

The Household Troops band (above) unites with the Amsterdam Staff Band in their latest album, Unified.

Recorded in January 2020, Unified is the new compilation album from the Amsterdam Staff Band and The Household Troops Band. The repertoire mixes fine music, mostly new, some already published, but all with the deeper message of God’s love for us.

From explosive music – packed with energy and technical fireworks – found in ‘Living Power’, to the lonely, quiet start of ‘The Break of Day’, I find that what unifies this album is the hymn tunes and associated words are ever-present and easily recognised. The words, at times, seem to soar out of the music.

‘A Voice to Call’ has the words on the tip of your tongue as you are carried along in this piece. It’s a reminder that even in the chaos, ‘Just where He needs me, my Lord has placed me’.

Even in the simplest moments on this album, such as in ‘Unbounded Love’, God’s presence seems to speak to the soul in a special way. May you become Unified with others who will listen to this album, as we consider Matthew 18:20, “Where two or three are gathered ... I am with them.”

Unified is available from Sydney Salvationist Supplies (1800 634 209) or thetrade.salvos.org.au, and Melbourne Salvation Army Supplies (1800 100 018) or commerce.salvationarmy.org.au.
