Ourspace Launch

Date: 4th September 2014 12:00pm
Location: Newcastle, NSW

The Salvation Army Newcastle and Central NSW Division is excited and proud to partner with Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation, which has donated significant funds to purchase a mobile coffee cart and redesign the existing outreach bus at Oasis Hunter.

The coffee cart and bus form part of Oasis Hunter’s Ourspace program, which focuses on early intervention for young people at risk of becoming isolated and disengaged from the community. The bus is fitted with computers, music and multimedia equipment as well as space to engage, participate and learn.

A launch will be held at Empire Park Skate Park in Newcastle on Thursday 4 September, 12pm, to engage the Hunter’s youth and show how this great mobile educational facility can cater for lots of people.

Local youth at the skate park and people walking by can pick up a free coffee from well-known barista Rob McCorriston of Café de Beaumont, who will be test driving the new coffee cart. Meanwhile, the bus will be decked out with music and other resources to put on a show for media and members of the public.

Oasis Hunter manager, Peter Martin, says, “the update to the Ourspace program will offer young people the opportunity to access crisis support, referrals, job seeking services and short-courses including first aid, hospitality, IT and multimedia.”

The coffee cart will be available for local community events and be used as a source of income to sustain the ongoing delivery of the Ourspace program.

“We are very thankful to Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation and we are excited about the potential their support will give us in further engaging youth in our region,” Peter said.
