Week 4 - Using Self Denial Appeal resources

16 March 2022

Following this morning's reflection, take a moment to re-read the Scripture passage from Matthew chapter 13, verses 3-9 and verses 18-23.

3 “Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seeds. 4 As he scattered them across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate them. 5 Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. 6 But the plants soon wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn’t have deep roots, they died. 7 Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants. 8 Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted! 9 Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”

18 “Now listen to the explanation of the parable about the farmer planting seeds. 19 The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who hear the message about the Kingdom and don’t understand it. Then the evil one comes and snatches away the seed that was planted in their hearts. 20 The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy. 21 But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God’s word. 22 The seed that fell among the thorns represents those who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced. 23 The seed that fell on good soil represents those who truly hear and understand God’s word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty or even a hundred times as much as had been planted.”

Meditate on the phrase, ‘Knowing I am known’.

Consider

Revelation
What basic truth does it teach?
Conviction
How does this challenge me?
How does this correct, balance and direct me?
Action
What does this Scripture lead me to change within me?
How is the Lord leading and loving me as I plan to act on this Scripture?

Prayer
Dear Lord, enlarge my vision of the immense possibilities of the Army reaching the people of the world. Touch my heart and help me to do my part at the altar on Self Denial Sunday.
For your love’s sake, Amen.

Children’s resources

This guide is based on the Self Denial Appeal children's magazine. Find it here
Introduction
Ask the children what they remember about the Self Denial Appeal from last week.
Say the memory verse, Ephesians 3:20-21, together (week one of the magazine).
Collect the children’s money boxes. Thank them, and chat about what special things they did to raise money for the Self Denial Appeal. Pray, thanking God for their efforts and thanking him that he will use their funds to help people around the world. (Obviously, this depends on how your corps does the ‘ wrap up’).
Read
Ask a child (if your class is old enough) to read out loud ‘Here at home in Australia etc.’ (page 15), which explains what the children will see in the video.
Watch

The Week 4 Self Denial video, ‘Water and Health’ (Self Denial Appeal 2022) (2 minutes 31 seconds) under the kids’ videos tab.
Chat about the idea of giving up something with the intention of giving the money to the appeal – such as tuckshop money, pocket money etc
Read
Look through the three sections on page 14 as an introduction to this week’s activities.
Create
Make Cheffy’s recipe, slaai, on page 15. This easy recipe requires no cooking but does need 20 minutes to marinate, so prepare it early in the session if you decide to make it. Be aware of allergies as the recipe includes crushed peanuts.
Create the folk embroidery paper plate, finishing off the activity with the ‘Hey crafty crew!’ message in the blue box.
Read
The Traveller goes to South Africa (page 17). Do the worksheet, remembering to have an image of the South African flag to show the children.
Pray
Dear God, thank you that The Salvation Army shows love and care for people around the world. Thank you that we can help their work with our Self Denial money.
