Week 5 - Using Self Denial Appeal resources

23 March 2022

Following this morning’s reflection, take a moment to re-read the Scripture passage from Acts chapter 2, verses 32-41.

32 “God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand 35 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”’  36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off – for all whom the Lord our God will call.” 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptised, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

Consider

Revelation
What basic truth does it teach?
Conviction
How does this challenge me?
How does this correct, balance and direct me?
Action
What does this Scripture lead me to change within me?
How is the Lord leading and loving me as I plan to act on this Scripture?
Prayer
Dear Lord, I pray for the guidance of your Holy Spirit.
By your grace enable me to obey his leading and empower me to follow his direction.
For your love’s sake, Amen.

Children's resources

This guide is based on the Self Denial Appeal children’s magazine. Find it here
Introduction
Ask the children what they remember about the Self Denial Appeal from last week. Remind them what a ripple effect is – how when you drop a stone into water it creates circles around it. The Self Denial Appeal is like that stone ... the money we give (SDA) creates ripples of good as the money is used to help people all around the world.
Say the memory verse, Ephesians 3:20-21, together (week one of the magazine).
Read
Ask a child (if your class is old enough) to read out loud ‘Did you know that there are more than 2000 Salvation Army schools etc.’ (page 15)’, which explains what the children will see in the video.
Watch
The Week 5 Self Denial video, ‘Education’ (Self Denial Appeal 2022) (2 minutes 32 seconds) under the kids’ videos tab.
Chat about what they like most about school – art, music, maths, science, reading books etc.
Finish off with Cousin Koala’s speech bubble on page 18.
Read
Look through the three sections on page 18 as an introduction to this week’s activities.
Create
Make the coffee filter water lilies on page 20 as a reference to Sri Lanka’s national flower. Finish the activity with the message ‘Hey crafty crew’ in the green box.
Read
The Traveller goes to South Africa (page 21). Do the worksheet, remembering to have an image of the Jamaican flag to show the children.
Remind them that putting money into their money box helps to run these schools run by The Salvation Army around the world.
To do at home
Have a cook-up at home and make potato and rice pulao (page 19) with your fam. Yum!
Pray
Dear God, thank you that The Salvation Army shows love and care for children around the world by running these awesome schools. Thank you that our Self Denial money helps to do this.
