Tribute - Evelyn White
Tribute - Evelyn White
Major Evelyn White was promoted to glory from her home at Bethany in Port Macquarie (NSW) on Monday 1 February 2021, aged 88.
Evelyn Rose White trained as a nursing sister before entering The Salvation Army Officer Training College from Ryde Corps (NSW) in March 1958. Evelyn joined the Courageous session of cadets and, after commissioning, her first appointment was at Bethesda Hospital Sydney, where she stayed until April 1960. She then relocated to Hillcrest Hospital Merewether (NSW) until July 1963, before returning to Bethesda Hospital in Sydney (1963-Feb 1965).
In March 1965, Evelyn left Australia to take up an appointment in India, and this is where she ministered for the next 25 years. Her first appointment was at Macrobert Hospital (1965-1970). She then relocated to Catherine Booth Hospital, Nagercoil (1970-1977) and then Calcutta Women’s Hostel for eight months (1978), before just over two years at New Delhi Children’s Home (Nov 1978-1980). In 1981, Evelyn returned to Macrobert Hospital until she left the country in July 1985.
On her arrival back in Australia, Evelyn took up the appointment as the administrator of Macquarie Lodge (NSW) for six months. She then did 12 months as the administrator at Maybanke Hostel (1985), but her real passion was ministering to the people, so after a break in service, in July 1987 Evelyn accepted the appointment of Resident Care Officer at Macquarie Lodge (NSW) where she ministered until her retirement on 1 June 1990, completing 30 years active service for God and The Salvation Army, most of which was missionary service.
In retirement, Evelyn enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her nieces and nephews, and tending to her garden, especially her roses. She loved to sew and loved reading – and she could shop for hours!
Our love, sympathy and prayers are with friends and family as they mourn the passing of Evelyn Rose White.
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).
The funeral for Major Evelyn White was held on Friday 5 February at Port Macquarie Salvation Army, conducted by Major Sue McGuigan.
