Tribute - Hazel Smith

Major Hazel Smith was promoted to glory Wednesday 7 July 2021, aged 80.

Hazel Diston was born in Evesham, United Kingdom, on 2 January 1941. She married Colin Smith on 21 February 1958 in Ealing West London, and they were blessed with four children – Mark, Peter, Paul (dec.) and Catherine – with their partners Lyn, Sue, and Craig. Proud Nan of Melanie (dec.), Rhiannon, Shawn (dec.) and Sarah.

Hazel and Colin entered officership and were commissioned on 16 January 1975.

Moving to Australia, Hazel held many appointments ministering with Colin in Victoria at Coburg Corps in 1975 and Kensington Corps 1977, in South Australia at Mansfield Corps 1981, Semaphore Corps 1984, Campbelltown Corps 1986 and Salisbury Corps 1988 (built Parafield Gardens 1991), Morwell (Vic.) in 1992 and Moonah Corps (Tas.) in 1994. Hazel and Colin were then appointed back to South Australia to Noarlunga Corps with Family Support Services in 1998, Nailsworth Corps in 1999 and Court Officer. Her final appointment was Associate Court Chaplain in South Australia in 2000.

Hazel entered retirement with Colin in 2002, making their home in South Australia. Hazel and Colin were still very active in their officership during their retirement years, caretaking Busselton Corps in Western Australia for three months and Millicent Corps in South Australia for three months. Hazel was involved at Adelaide Congress Hall, where she took her place in the band, singing group, Bible study, Red Shield collecting and any other activities.

Our love and prayers, along with our heartfelt sympathy, cover the family.

“Her master said to her, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.
You have been faithful ... Enter into the joy of your master.”
(Matthew 25:23)

A celebration of Major Hazel’s life will be held on Saturday 17 July 2021, commencing at 11am, at The Salvation Army, Adelaide Congress Hall. The service will be live-stream via Ivan Butler Funeral website. Captains Shane and Sarah Healey will conduct the service.
