The Salvation Army Motorcycle Ministry (SAMM) served at Capricorn Region Corps in Rockhampton on Queensland’s Central Coast last weekend, as part of its Annual General Meeting on Saturday 1 October.

“Ten of our members travelled many ‘ministry miles’ to be a part of this fellowship and service,” said Captain Trevor Friend, who is the Queensland Executive Officer for the group.

Captain Phillip McCall, National Executive Officer of SAMM, rode from Goulburn, on the Southern Tablelands of NSW, for the event.

“It was great to get together, have a chat and discuss business and serve the corps,” he said. “We also had a couple of witness opportunities on the way up and back, which often happens at service stations. We make an effort to talk with people, they ask questions and we go from there.”

On Sunday morning, the SAMM members led the meeting at Capricorn Region Corps and shared about their ministry. The meeting included Captain Friend inducting Major Garry Johnson, Bay and Basin Mission Leader in Nowra, NSW, to full SAMM colours.

“SAMM demonstrates two things - that declaring one's love for God and sharing that experience with others can take many forms and be effective,” said Major Colin Maxwell, Capricorn Region Corps Officer. “Secondly, that God is interested in all people and that all people - tall, short, male, female, boy, girl, biker, pedestrian or driver - are loved into his shape by God himself.”

SAMM membership is growing, with 24 members around Australia including Melbourne and Perth. “This ministry is all about reaching motorcycle riders,” says Captain McCall. “This could be riders from a bike gang, or members of a local dirt bike club. Anyone who rides a bike, we will sit with and have a chat. If it leads to conversion well and good. It’s all about coming alongside other motorcycle riders.”
