The Salvation Army in Peru is providing assistance to more than 400 families whose homes were destroyed in a fire that swept through the Cantagallo community in the country's capital Lima last week.
Cantagallo is a shanty area, consisting primarily of simple wooden huts that has been home to the Shipiba indigenous people since 2000. At least 300 homes were destroyed in the fast-moving fire, leaving around 2000 people homeless. No one was killed but a child was admitted to hospital with severe burns and about 50 people were treated for smoke inhalation.
Lima Mayor Luis Castañeda confirmed that the fire “broke out at around 2am”. He said relief would be provided for those who had been affected, especially the vulnerable.
“I’m talking about children, mothers, those who have suffered the most,” he said.
A Salvation Army team is working with the people of Cantagallo, providing breakfast, essential care items and support to families who have lost their homes and possessions.
