The third annual Jayne Wilson Memorial Arts Competition and Exhibition, which honours the legacy of a woman who established the First Floor Program in Wollongong, was officially opened on 19 January by Wollongong Mayor, Gordon Bradbery.

Jayne was instrumental in the development of a holistic and family-inclusive counselling and support program for those impacted by alcohol and other drug misuse, mental health issues, grief and loss and trauma.

After passing away on Christmas Day 2013, Jayne left behind an inspiring legacy of helping people through dark times and for her creativity, being known to use artwork activities in the support and counselling groups she ran.

"Spread Your Wings" is one of the artworks on display.

“This is our annual celebration of creativity, honouring Jayne’s service to the community and her passion for family, recovery and hospitality. Arts have a central place in our programs, and we hope people who attend the exhibition are encouraged to participate, to explore their own creativity,” said Marilyn Dunn, the First Floor Program coordinator.

The exhibition received 112 entries this year, based on the theme “Harmony”. Entries include paintings, sculptures, musical compositions, photography, written expressions, fabric crafts and mosaics. The theme was chosen with the aim to bring the Wollongong community together.

“The focus is getting community participation. That’s what Jayne wanted. Having a hospitable place where people can feel welcome,” said Marilyn.

Among the awards on offer, the Wilson Family Awards, sponsored by Bendigo Bank in Fairy Meadow, are selected by Jayne’s family members and are given to the artists whose work best represent Jayne’s spirit and legacy.

At the official launch held last week, the winners of the Wilson Family Awards were announced. Gennifer Anderson and Lisa Tye won the Wilson Open Category award, Tullia Cooper received the Wilson Family Youth (12-17 years) award and Aiden Campbell the Wilson Family Child (under 12) award. Further awards will be announced on 29 January.

The exhibition also features a mixed media installation by local artist and winner of the Wilson Family Award in 2015, Shining Rainbow.

The Jayne Wilson Memorial Arts Competition and Exhibition is open daily from 10am-3pm until 30 January at The Salvation Army centre, 11-13 Burelli Street, Wollongong. Go to the Wollongong Salvos' website for further information.
