The President of Portugal has publicly thanked The Salvation Army for its work among the homeless during a recent visit by General André Cox and Commissioner Silvia Cox.
Dr Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa met with the General and Commissioner Cox and as well as Spain and Portugal Command leaders, Lieut-Colonels Gordon and Susan Daly at Belém Palace during a weekend visit by the Salvation Army's world leaders. The president showed a keen interest in the ministry of The Salvation Army and offered thanks for the work that is being undertaken, especially with homeless people.
The General and Comissioner Cox were able to meet with officers and social services staff, presenting long-service awards to staff members and Dr António Eva Ferreira, who has been the Army's legal counsel there for almost 35 years. Officers councils and a women's rally were also attended by the couple.
A celebration festival on Saturday evening featured elements from both the Salvation Army and traditional Portuguese culture. The night also included the presentation of brass instruments for use in Portugal by British Salvationists John and Margaret Large and acknowledging soldiers who had been enrolled in the past three years, mostly young people.
After a moving Sunday morning holiness meeting, the General and Commissioner Cox met with a group of young people, before a final praise and testimony meeting concluded the visit.
