A positive life, at last!
A positive life, at last!
26 April 2017
Cameron’s addiction to alcohol saw him staring down the barrel of a prison sentence. But everything changed when he agreed to participate in The Salvation Army’s Positive Lifestyle Program. He spoke to Others Online about the difference the program has made to his life.
My name’s Cameron. I’m 33 and I’m an alcoholic. I still have a bit of trouble admitting that.
I was looking at going to jail. My marriage had ended and I wasn’t allowed to see my children.
I came to The Salvation Army’s Positive Lifestyle Program by recommendation and I’m glad that I did. It has changed my life in ways that I couldn’t imagine. So much has changed since starting the program. People tell me on a regular basis that I seem like a different person.
The program was one-on-one and it actually took me into why I was drinking in the first place, rather than just trying to stop drinking.
I’ve done things in the last 10 months that I’ve never done in my life. I actually feel like I’m re-living my teenage years all over again!
I’ve got access to my children now. People trust me and I’m starting to build a future for myself. I’ve started going to church and I’ve got good people around me for the first time in my life.
There’s so many people out there that I see these days that could use the help of the Salvos. To the people that are looking at doing the Positive Lifestyle Program, it’s worth it. It really makes a difference if you want it to. If you put in the energy and time and effort, you can get there if you want to.
Cameron is now working as an intern at Hamilton Corps in Newcastle and is studying his Certificate IV in Community Services.
