Salvos' St Kilda centre close to securing significant accreditation

The Salvation Army’s St Kilda Crisis Contact Centre has received encouraging news as part of its accreditation process. Early indications are that it will receive a “Rainbow Tick” from the Victorian Government, ensuring the continuation of the much-needed service in inner-Melbourne.
The Rainbow Tick is an accreditation program designed to guide organisations through a cycle of self-assessment, and review by external assessors, to determine the extent to which the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people are met.
The St Kilda centre offers support, information and referrals to people who are facing difficult situations including housing, dealing with family violence, or working through mental health, alcohol or drug issues.
“Proclaiming the hope of the Christian gospel and responding to human need without discrimination are foundational to The Salvation Army,” said National Secretary for Communications, Lieutenant-Colonel Bruce Stevens.
“In a world where so many are broken, the love of God compels us to reach out and share this hope in all its fullness. We are therefore delighted that our St Kilda crisis service has been recognised for its commitment to live out our mission, with the Rainbow Tick affirming the centre is a safe place for the LGBTI community.”
Lieut-Colonel Stevens said the decision to explore Rainbow Tick accreditation for the St Kilda centre as a trial has the support of Salvation Army leadership. The Salvation Army is determined to continue reassuring the LGBTI community of its commitment to care for them without discrimination.
“In celebrating this achievement, we remind ourselves of Christ’s mandate to love everyone irrespective of other factors,” he said. “Caring for the practical needs of individuals without discrimination is a non-negotiable for us.
“Our focus is always on walking alongside people and sharing the hope of the Christian gospel as well as responding to their practical needs. It's great to know this ministry will be continuing at the centre.”
