Day of prayer to bring slavery to its knees
Day of prayer to bring slavery to its knees
18 September 2017
“Stand up for Justice” is the theme for this year’s Annual Day of Prayer for Victims of Human Trafficking on 24 September.
Australia is not immune from this growing and hugely profitable global criminal activity, which enslaves and abuses millions of men, women and girls of every age and background.
People are trafficked into Australia to work on farms, in factories, brothels and industries such as hospitality, cleaning and construction. Every day we use products and services that have been produced using slave labour.
“We call upon Salvationists and friends of The Salvation Army in Australia to join us on this important day of prayer, and to engage with our efforts to end this inhumane practice,” wrote Commissioners Floyd and Tracey Tidd, Australian Salvation Army leaders, in a recent letter endorsing this annual day of prayer.
“It is [also] important that we continue to educate ourselves about the ways in which trafficked people touch our lives through the products and services we use.”
The Salvation Army’s Freedom Partnership to End Modern Slavery and JustSalvos have collaborated to produce a resource pack that can be used by individuals, small groups or congregations as they participate in this important day of prayer.
This resource kit helps raise particular awareness about human trafficking and slavery in Australia, and provides practical ways that you can be part of ending slavery.
The kit includes:
· Facts on slavery in Australia
· The work of The Salvation Army in Australia against human trafficking and slavery
· Prayer station suggestions, sermon outlines and videos
· The letter of endorsement from Commissioners Floyd and Tracey Tidd
· Links to additional resources from International Headquarters
· Links to Salvation Army and mainstream media reports on the push for a Modern Slavery Act.
“The Annual Day of Prayer is a wonderful way for us to reflect on the very real impact that slavery has on our fellow human beings and to recommit ourselves to take action in our personal lives, at our workplaces and in our communities to bring them to freedom,” said Jenny Stanger, National Manager, Freedom Partnership.
“Ending slavery is a choice. Be part of our ‘chain of good’ in whatever ways you can.”
