Maxwells begin appointments as Ambassadors for Holiness and Prayer
28 September 2017
Renewed focus on The Salvation Army as a holiness movement will form the foundation of Colonels Wayne and Robyn Maxwell’s new appointments as part of the Australia One Program.
The Maxwells were recently appointed as National Ambassadors for Holiness and Prayer, new roles that National Commander, Commissioner Floyd Tidd, sees as crucial to the way forward as Australia’s two Salvation Army territories become one.
“This appointment signifies the foundation upon which The Salvation Army delivers its mission,” Commissioner Tidd said. "The appointments provide a renewed focus on our Wesleyan heritage and a contemporary understanding and application of holiness and prayer. The future of The Salvation Army and our effectiveness is directly connected to our experience of holiness and practice of prayer.”
The Maxwells had been serving in the joint role of Assistant Secretary to the National Chief Secretary, Colonel Mark Campbell, since returning to the Australia Eastern Territory in February.
For almost four years prior to their return, Wayne had been serving as the Territorial Commander and Robyn as the Territorial President for Women’s Ministries, in the Philippines Territory. They had to leave the country when the Philippines Government announced it would be enforcing a law restricting the role of expatriates in their country.
Due to serious consequences for people and organisations not adhering to this law, The Salvation Army’s International Headquarters made a decision to reappoint the Maxwells back to Australia and install new national leadership in the Philippines.
The Maxwells’ new appointments became effective on 1 September. They report directly to the National Commander and are members of the National Cabinet.
"These appointments underscore the importance of the spiritual life of the Army in the way ahead, as the Australian territories come together as one," said Colonel Wayne. "Although existing in different forms in other parts of The Salvation Army world, these appointments are new to Australia and will continue to develop over time."
Holiness roots
"These are significant days for the Salvation Army in Australia as we move towards becoming one,” said Colonel Robyn. “We need to be a prayerful people reflecting holiness in the everyday.
“We have been waiting on the Lord, to see where he will lead us in these appointments. He has spoken to us through Joshua 3:5 – ‘Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you’. We believe this to be a word for us personally and for the Army in these days. We enter into this new appointment prayerfully seeking his direction as we do not want to race ahead with our own agenda."
Colonel Wayne said that part of their role will be to engage Salvationists in seeking the life of holiness and prayer and encourage the practise of holy living. "Many are doing this well and we also want to partner with them," he said. "These are exciting days and we look forward to this journey together."
Collaboration
The Maxwells will also work in collaboration with the National Secretary for Spiritual Life, Captain Lance Jeffrey, in focusing on the holistic life of the Salvationist. Their appointments are related, but distinct.
“The National Secretary for Spiritual Life will provide overview of the spiritual health of the movement considering the effectiveness of our evangelism and discipleship approaches,” said Commissioner Tidd.
“The National Secretary for Spiritual Life will work with leadership at all levels to identify the current strengths and opportunities for developing a deeper spiritual experience for all who are connected to The Salvation Army. The Ambassadors for Holiness and Prayer will provide support to the spiritual life of the Army and work closely with the National Secretary for Spiritual Life.
“We are grateful for the availability of Colonels Wayne and Robyn Maxwell to fulfil these significant appointments for such a time as these foundational days for Australia One.”
