In the lead-up to Remembrance Day, Major Brett Gallagher, Chief Commissioner of Red Shield Defence Services (RSDS), presented the book Cuppa Tea, Digger? to the Chief of the Australian Army, Lieut-General Rick Burr.

Brett presented the book in appreciation of the Australian Army’s support of the RSDS. The gift was especially poignant to Lieut-General Burr as his great uncle, Red Shield Representative George Jones, is recorded in the book.

Better known as the ‘Chief Sallyman’ by Australian Defence Force personnel, Brett left a message of thanks inside.

“I would personally like to thank you for the way you engage with the Sallyman team as you visit around the country. It gives them a great boost when you stop by for a brew,” he wrote. “I hope you can gain some further insight and encouragement from the stories of Sallymen past and present.”

Cuppa Tea, Digger? was written by The Salvation Army Museum Manager, Lindsay Cox, in celebration of the Army’s contribution during World War Two. Its connection to the current Australian Army is found on page 1, the foreword written by Sir Peter Cosgrove, former Governor-General and a retired senior Australian Army officer.

Every RSL branch across Australia has received a copy of Cuppa Tea, Digger?
