5 minutes with a Thrift Store Volunteer
5 December 2021
Meet Rhonda – a Thrift Shop volunteer for the past 12 years at The Salvation Army. Today we want to celebrate her, alongside all our other incredible Salvos volunteers, who give generously of their time and talents to serve the mission and vision of the Army. And on International Volunteer Day, we thought it would be a great time to hear some of Rhonda’s insights into volunteering at the Salvos.
What can you remember about your first day of volunteering?
My first thought as I stepped into the Thrift Shop was, “I have never been in a shop like this in my life before.” It was all totally new to me.
What is your favourite part about volunteering?
One of my favourite things about volunteering at The Salvation Army Thrift Shop is all the food the ladies bring and the recipes we swap, as well as the teamwork, and togetherness. Every day is different!
Do you have a favourite quote or scripture verse?
“So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid’” (Hebrews 13:6).
What would people never guess you do in your volunteer role?
Throwing out people’s household garbage that they have accidentally donated.
If you were to write a book about yourself, what would you name it?
‘Don’t count me out’.
What advice would you give to people who are thinking about volunteering?
Go for it, it’s heaps of fun!
Complete this sentence: “I’m happiest when … “
“… working with the crew here at the Thrift Shop!”
