As damaging weather continues to ravage Australia’s east coast, displacing thousands of people, The Salvation Army is launching an appeal to fund relief efforts in flood-affected areas.

The Salvation Army Flood Appeal aims to raise $10 million, which will directly support the estimated 18,000 homes expected to be impacted during these unprecedented floods. In addition, $1 million has been released from The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal funds to support flood-hit communities.

“The Salvation Army is appealing to the public for donations to help ensure we can support those devastated by these floods get back on their feet,” said Major Bruce Harmer, National Public Relations Secretary for The Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army Emergency Services (SAES) has 10 teams assisting at 10 evacuation centres in Queensland and NSW. The SAES is supporting first responders and evacuees with meals (more than 6500) and providing emotional and practical support. The SAES is operating evacuation sites at Nambour, Gympie (two locations), Ipswich, Caboolture, Dakabin, Chandler, Logan, Lismore, and Tweed Heads.

“Salvation Army personnel are on the ground right now providing thousands of meals for those impacted by floods across the east coast of Australia,” Bruce said. “In addition to providing meals, our teams on the ground are offering emotional support, which is well received by those displaced from their homes.”

After the initial emergency response phase, The Salvation Army will remain in communities for the long term to ensure people are supported through the recovery and rebuild phases of this disaster.

Teams of caseworkers will be mobilised to affected locations and will work directly with individuals and families to provide grants, financial support, and acute care for the duration of the recovery journey.

“We have seen in the past two years, through bushfires, floods, drought and COVID-19, the spirit of generosity shown in times of hardship. We are calling again on Australians to help us be there for the incredible number of people displaced by the floods. Please, if you are able, give to The Salvation Army’s Flood Appeal,” Bruce said.

I was very impressed with the salvation army fellow who spoke to the TV media on Sunday morning and was trying to hold back tears. He has been working and living in Lismore for 2 and a half years with 2 young children and is constantly working to provide meals to evacuees in makeshift centres and provide emotional support. Coraki had just opened up and he was arranging for meals and support to go out there. He made it very clear that money was needed to buy necessary supports and services required initially. Later on goods can be provided. This help is going to be required for an indefinite amount of time due to large need for resources and people to build new accommodation.
