Equip campers ... in their own words
Equip campers ... in their own words
13 October 2022
Youth and young adults from across New South Wales gathered for their Equip Camp recently, to learn by doing, and to prepare for making a difference in their own communities. The camp was held at the Collaroy Centre on Sydney’s northern beaches from 25 September-1 October. Young people took part in a variety of electives, workshops, life labs, fun theme days and games nights. The NSW camp follows successful Equip camps in South East Queensland and North Queensland. Below, four campers share their experiences of the NSW camp.

“I really loved being taught practically about how to go into the community and actually be equipped to do sports stuff. People often see church as being all about the worship or being a traditional Christian, but it’s nice to have the skills now to minister through sport so people can see Christians in a different light. We learned a structured way to minister, pray, play, say ... it’s about bringing Christ into your sports activities. After Equip I want to be more conscious about when I’m playing sport, about how godly I act ... [and] how cool it would be to run a holiday program. I’d definitely come back to Equip, especially as having a two-year gap with COVID, a lot of younger kids haven’t been here before. I didn’t know if it would be different, so I gave it a shot again this year, and it’s definitely worth coming back to again.”

“I did dance stream. I learned that no matter what, Jesus is in everything. I am truly loved and blessed and seen and heard, and worthy by God. The highlight for me in dance was the experience and teachers, and the people there as well. We shared our stories as well. It was fabulous to hear others and to share dance with them.”

“I did worship tech. In worship tech this week, we went through all the ins and outs, how to bump in and bump out, how to work consoles, and how to work with a worship team to make the best worship experience. The highlight for me in worship tech was the Overflow sessions, where we learnt by doing, and we got to actually help and use consoles during a service experience. After Equip I really want to come back to my church and serve and help out. I think it’d be amazing to have an Equip in Tassie.”

“In our music stream, we really worked on playing songs for Overflow and working as a team to know that we’re not playing for ourselves, but we’re playing for God. Just playing all together, being vulnerable, being so accepting of each other, to come together and play ... it was really nice to be able to come into a positive space. After Equip I really want to work on my confidence in playing more and being more involved in my church.”
