Indigenous artist says thanks on canvas

Sunraysia Corps in northern Victoria has been presented with a piece of Indigenous artwork that has been painted especially for The Salvation Army.

Corps Officer Major Debbie Serojales said the “amazing” piece, created by local artist Dani Schubert of ‘Art by D Schubert’, is based on the Salvos’ work in the Sunraysia region and the community members who utilise these services.

“The title of the artwork is simply ‘The Salvation Army’, and it will be displayed in our Community Support Services [Doorways] centre for everyone to see,” Debbie said. “Dani just came in with it last week and presented it to us. She said The Salvation Army had helped her at one stage and because she received love and care, she simply wanted to give something back.”

On her website page, Dani says she is a proud Anangu woman from the Pitjantjatjara tribe in the Northern Territory. “Currently, I’m creating my works on Latji latji country in Victoria, and art is my connection to home. I suffered a long history of domestic violence and have used my connection to home as a healing process.”

In describing the painting, Dani says, “the community members are represented in the middle, and the workers are represented on the left and right of the painting. You can see the clients are of all ages and races, which shows the wide range of people The Salvation Army helps on a daily basis.

“The workers on the right and left use their experience and care to spread warmth over everyone. The workers have different intricate detail to show all your different experiences, backgrounds and lives and how it enhances the client’s experience.

“The coloured circles represent the wide range of services The Salvation Army provides. From food relief, clothing relief and spiritual guidance to help at Christmas. The Salvation Army is always working hard. The tan background represents the warmth, joy and homely feeling clients feel with your mob.”

Coffee and partnerships on the move at Noosa

Noosa coffee vanAuxiliary-Lieutenant Matt Gluyas celebrates the arrival of the corps coffee van with Noosa/Coolum Corps member Evelyn, and Steve from Padre Coffee.

Noosa/Coolum Corps on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast has purchased a caravan fitted out for barista coffee that will be used with missional intent.

Corps Officer Auxiliary-Lieutenant Matt Gluyas said the van would be used to provide barista certificate training for young people. The corps already provides a successful barista certificate training program onsite in the corps building, but the caravan will allow the training to go mobile for those who can’t travel into Noosaville.

“Our new coffee caravan will shift the trajectory of our young people from one that is potentially dependant upon welfare supports to one that builds a sustainable future,” he said. “Our research shows the hinterland [on the Sunshine Coast] is one of extreme need, without much in the way of support. We see the coffee caravan as an initial step of being present in the Noosa hinterland community.”

In the new year, the corps will take the van to hinterland communities once a week to provide coffee, training and a ‘pop-up’ SalvoConnect space. Sunny Street Medical has agreed to provide a bulk-bill doctor for vulnerable populations at the Salvos Coolum building. They are working on options to accompany the van when it begins operating next February.

Padre Coffee, a local coffee shop, offers ongoing support with reduced-price and free coffee beans and barista training for free. Other partners supporting the training include Noosa Council, Noosa District High School, St Andrews Anglican College and other local service providers.

“Our heart is that the young people work alongside some of our team and will come to know Jesus and continue making disciples in the emerging generation,” Matt said.

Moneycare and Parramatta Salvos collaborated for an Anti-Poverty Week (16-22 October) event last month. More than 100 people attended. Community members were then able to visit an expo where these services provided immediate advice and help.

Attendees were entertained by some Sri Lankan dancing, and a not-for-profit organisation ‘Kids Giving Back’ provided free lunch for everyone. There were 10 lucky-door-prize hampers given away, filled with items donated by the corps.
