New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet presented Captain Donna Sutcliffe with the NSW Government Community Service Award at a ceremony at the Sydney Opera House last month.

Donna accepted the award on behalf of herself and her husband, Captain Philip Sutcliffe, Northern Rivers Corps Officers, on Friday 9 December.

The NSW Government Community Service Award recognises individuals in NSW who have substantially helped to improve the quality of life of members of their community. This is beyond what would reasonably be expected in their usual occupation. Janelle Saffin, NSW Member of Parliament for Lismore, nominated the Sutcliffes. Five other NSW community members also received the award this year.

“Philip and I feel a bit overwhelmed and humbled because so many other people in our community are just as deserving,” Donna said. “This is not about us, but for our team as well because that is the approach we take to ministry.”

Donna said the Premier asked how they were going and how the community was going as they recovered from multiple flood events in 2022. Donna explained to him how the community was coming together to meet the challenges, sharing resources and giving their time and financial support. She said the Christmas period was especially tough given the economic and social challenges and the physical flood recovery issues.

“This award is recognition for the work of the Salvos, of our presence and impact within our communities,” Donna said. “Our whole team is exhausted and ready for a break, but we will continue to do what we do because we love people.”

“To say that we are proud of Phil and Donna is a huge understatement,” said Lieutentant-Colonel Miriam Gluyas, Divisional Commander NSW/ACT. “During the floods and following the floods, they have served their community beautifully and tirelessly. We think they are pretty amazing and have seen first-hand how loved they are in their community.”
