Book review: Holiness Alive by Anita Caldwell
Book review: Holiness Alive by Anita Caldwell
18 November 2017
Holiness Alive, a 90-page, 2015 work by Anita Caldwell, is based on “her experience of life and ministry … in her native United States … Haiti, Russia, Moldova, Georgia and … as a corps officer at Waco, Texas”.
Her musings are followed by a 25-page holiness Bible study, based on the preceding chapters.
Caldwell, a former Words of Life guest writer, has an assured devotional bent, attuned to The Salvation Army.
She advocates the holy joy of dancing with God: “in blessing others, in honesty, by forgiveness, in humility, in silence before God, by choosing joy, and with accountability”.
A dance is as fluid and graceful as the steps taken, the melodies and rhythms accessed, and the abandonment of the dancer.
The writer is to be commended for her quest for grace and zeal for the dance. Some instances of humour and insight shine out.
Acknowledging the target audience, Holiness Alive doesn’t breathe new life into this subject for this reviewer.
Its use of dated, dry language may defeat the book’s purpose for younger and older readers alike.
That said, holiness, as with beauty, is a quality that attracts; Caldwell’s book will attract a readership that will appreciate it.
Holiness Alive is available from Trade in Melbourne for $21.50.
