Book Review: The Faith of Queen Elizabeth, by Dudley Delffs

While Dudley Delffs’ expose into Queen Elizabeth’s faith is an easy read, reviewer Elizabeth Little finds it lacks depth.

By Elizabeth Little

The Faith of Queen Elizabeth is an enjoyable read for those interested in the Her Majesty’s life.

Delffs’ prose is easy to read, and he presents each key moment of the Queen’s life with care. He argues that her considered approach to the various dramas of her own and her children’s lives is evidence of her faithfulness, and he does this well. However, the ‘faith’ aspect of the text lacks depth.

The majority of claims Delffs makes about the depth and strength of Her Majesty’s faith are from his own analysis or conclusions drawn from speeches she has made. Delffs applies his own biblical knowledge to her secular speeches, drawing parallels with biblical stories and lessons that are a stretch.

Coupled with the many references to Netflix series The Crown, the text lacked the integrity of a thorough consideration of the faith of Queen Elizabeth.

The Faith of Queen Elizabeth is available at Koorong.

Elizabeth Liittle is a schoolteacher in Melbourne.
