Book review: Woven - A Faith for the Dissatisfied, by Joel McKerrow

Spoken-word poet Joel McKerrow unravels religious frameworks in his memoir Woven.

Reviewed by Ashton Higgins

In this memoir, Australian spoken-word poet and activist Joel McKerrow addresses a lot of the issues that young Christians face today.

He wrestles with what it means to make our faith our own – different to that of our parents, church community or friends.

Throughout the book, McKerrow frames this wrestling as an invitation to better understand ourselves and the world around us; to find the Divine in the ordinary, and to find peace in the process of unravelling and weaving ourselves back together. He does this with empathy and insight, having gone through the process himself.

This book is perfect for those Christians who are at the point in their lives where they’re not sure if this ‘Christianity thing’ is for them anymore. Woven will show that this searching is a part of the faith process and that God lies in that in-between place – in the place of unravelling and weaving back together.

Woven is available at Koorong.
