Six films for Valentine's Day
Six films for Valentine's Day
12 February 2022
Love or hate it, Valentine’s Day is nearly here, and it’s the perfect excuse to enjoy a romantic comedy. But trying to find a romantic movie without innuendos, sexual promiscuity, and with good acting – well, that’s harder than finding a date for 14 February. So, I did the hard work for you. Here are six films you will enjoy no matter your relationship status.
-
The Royal Treatment
This new comedy from Netflix is made of feel-good tropes –so it’s perfectly predictable if you want a wholesome love story! Starring Lauren Marano (Disney’s Austin and Ally), she is a Queens-based hairdresser named Izzy, who is contracted to do the makeup for handsome Prince Phillip’s wedding. Obviously, love ensures, but the best part is that Isabella keep her moral high ground and refuses to compromise her values. The fact this also shows an interracial romance is also noteworthy.
The Royal Treatment is rated G for very mild coarse language, violence, crude humour, themes and scary scenes.
Available to stream on Netflix.
-
A Walk To Remember
Twenty years ago, Mandy Moore acted as a sweet Christian girl named Jamie, who made the school’s bad boy promise not to fall in love with her.
The beauty and heartbreak that followed made the modernised version of the Nicholas Sparks novel a classic.
Featuring mature themes about illness, death, faith and morality, you will most definitely cry when you watch this. But I promise it’s worth it – and the soundtrack featuring Switchfoot, Rachel Lampa, and Mandy Moore is one of the best out there.
A Walk To Remember is rated PG for adult themes and low-level coarse language. Available to stream on iTunes.
Available on DVD from JB Hi-Fi.
-
Ms. White Light
Are you a cynic when it comes to love? Then this dark, witty drama is for you. Suited for mature audiences, Lex (Roberta Colindrez) is hired by families to counsel the dying. It’s a gruelling job for a woman who otherwise struggles to connect with humans, but things change when a terminally ill cancer patient hires her.
While there, she meets another death specialist, Spencer, who claims to comfort clients with messages from people who have passed on. Sure, it sounds weird, and both characters question the morality of the other. But the exposition into the purpose of life, with a margin of romance, makes it a thought-provoking and quirky film.
Ms. White Light is rated M for mature themes, coarse language, and mild impact violence and drug use.
Available to stream now on Wonder, Apple TV and Amazon Prime.
-
Love, Guaranteed
Pro bono lawyer Susan (Rachael Leigh Cook) is determined to change the world – but she needs to pay the bills. So when Nick (Damon Wayans Jr) asks her to represent his case against the matchmaking website ‘Love, Guaranteed’ in court, she agrees.
Yet, as she dives into the chaotic world of online dating, she discovers that all is not what it seems. Any person who has tried online dating will relate to this film, and while it’s predictable, it is also endearing. The fact that queen of the 90s Rachel Leigh Cook stars in this also makes it a dependable choice, and it’s nice to watch a romance about slightly more mature aged people.
Love, Guaranteed is rated G for very mild crude humour and coarse language.
Available to stream on Netflix.
-
Home Sweet Home
It’s hard to find low-budget Christian romance with noteworthy acting (trust me, I’ve tried), but Home Sweet Home is akin to a Hallmark Channel level romance.
Starring Natasha Bure (daughter of Candace Cameron Bure from Hallmark Channel), she portrays a shallow but smart woman who flirts her way to success. When she becomes hooked on the community outreach worker at church, she pretends to be a Christian.
Think of it like ‘flirt to convert’ turned upside down – but with power tools, lots of pink, and a church concert. There are plenty of cliches in this, but the fact the story celebrates mission makes it stand out.
Home Sweet Home is rated G for very mild themes.
Available to stream on Wonder, Apple TV and Amazon Prime.

The Tinder Swindler
Do you enjoy a good true crime documentary? The Tinder Swindler tells the story of con man Simon Leviev who meets women worldwide through the dating app Tinder and defrauds them to fund his multimillion-dollar lifestyle.
Told from the perspective of the women, it is a fascinating and heartbreaking watch. Yet through it all, you can’t help but be amazed at the courage, resilience, and tenacity of the women involved.
This documentary celebrates good journalism and what happens when women take back their power. A great watch for ‘Galentine’s Day’!
The Tinder Swindler is rated M for sex scenes (mild) and language.
Available to stream on Netflix.
