Just Men Conference revs up for billy cart chaos
16 August 2016
The thrills and spills of last year’s inaugural Billy Cart Race at the Sydney Just Men Conference could shift up a gear at this year's event.
Organisers of the Sydney conference, to be held at The Collaroy Centre on 9-11 September, are hoping to see up to 10 billy carts at the starting line this year, after four were entered last year.
“Last year’s winning father and son team, Liam and Topher Holland, are in putting together a new entry, Peer Cathcart at Narellan is making some adjustments while Tim Gittens from Bonnells Bay is hoping get a bit more speed out of his lawn mower-inspired cart,” Territorial Just Men Coordinator Captain Darren Kingston said.
But while having fun is a central part of the conference Captain Kingston says this year’s conference theme “Under Construction”, goes beyond billy cart creation.
“I am hoping participants can come to a deeper understanding of what we’re building towards in our lives,” he said. “We are all a work in progress individually and, corporately, we are living stones that God is building up in his spiritual house. Jesus takes every part, every stone, and knocks off the rough edges so we can form his building, his temple together.
“The conferences will explore how to deal with life when our building crumbles, and what can take our building down and the need to build our identity in Christ. Through the conference we want to inspire and support, to bring innovation and release to frontline leaders and local champions to raise up men to live out personally God’s design for manhood and to impact their families and communities with the good news.”
Leading this journey will be the conference’s guest speaker Allan Meyer, author of Valiant Man, who is passionate about what it means to be a man who is healthy - morally, sexually and spiritually.
The first of two Just Men conferences, the Sydney event will be followed by the Queensland gathering at Mapleton, on the Sunshine Coast, on 28-30 October. Along with the main sessions, the weekends will include an expo to ways men can get involved in their communities.
