Salvo Academy evening to focus on Indigenous Ministries
Salvo Academy evening to focus on Indigenous Ministries
24 July 2017
Salvationists can hear firsthand about the development of The Salvation Army’s Indigenous Ministries at the next Salvo Academy event tomorrow evening.
Members of The Salvation Army’s National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Reference Group will be featured guests at the Tuesday evening event, which will be held at Australia Eastern Territorial Headquarters in Redfern (7pm start). The event will also be live-streamed to groups gathering in Brisbane (Carindale Corps) and Canberra (Tuggeranong Corps).
Led by Reference Group Chair, Uncle Vince Ross, the evening will include the sharing of stories around development and growth of The Salvation Army and Indigenous Ministries as well as facilitating discussion with participants on issues such as “How Salvationists can engage with Australia’s Indigenous populations”.
Uncle Vince Ross first encountered The Salvation Army on a reserve in Deniliquin 58 years ago when they built shelters for people living by the riverbank.
The Army gave him an opportunity to develop his musical talents and choose a positive path for his life.
Along with his role in the reference group, Uncle Vince also gives back to his community in Geelong, mentoring young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
