Noosa-Coolum training room gets a makeover
6 February 2023
Absolute mayhem descended on the Noosa Corps site on Queensland’s Sunshne Coast recently.
“It was like a TV reno show!” Captain Matt Gluyas said. “But we now have a lovely oasis for our SCILS (Sunshine Coast Individualised Learning Support) students to study with dignity, feel valued, and worthy of such a positive environment.”
Matt explained that the training room had started to look tired and worn out, with dilapidated resources. So, Matt went to Bunnings to outline what the corps was trying to achieve. He explained that the corps was working with students who struggled in a normal school environment but that the corps didn’t have the financial resources to refurbish the space.
“We basically shared our heart to provide a positive environment for our students, and they responded,” he said.
Bunnings provided 20 workers for the day on 18 January, resulting in a new kitchen, carpets, study spaces, and multiple other resources. Taubmans Paints supplied the paint. Matt estimated over $10,000 worth of materials were donated, without counting the cost of labour.
For the past decade, the Noosa-Coolum Corps has worked with the Noosa District School to help educate disadvantaged students through the Sunshine Coast Individualised Learning Support (SCILS). The SCILS program is designed to help students who are at risk of disengaging from the education system. Students are supported by a school teacher and youth worker to maximise their potential.
“We have now created a space where they want to be, and helps them raise their learning levels,” Matt said.
