60 Second Verdict: The Breaker Upperers
4 August 2018
Breaking up relationships is a messy business for Mel and Jen in The Breaker Upperers.
By Mark Hadley
Mel and Jen are two women who were cheated on by the same guy, and decide to go into business together. They offer to break couples up for money. So if you’re in a messy relationship and don’t know how to get out of it, they will create the perfect excuse for you. Things go haywire, though, when Mel breaks the golden rule: never fall in love with a client.
WHAT’S GOOD
It’s a great examination of our loose commitment to relationships. It’s also a good questioning of our preparedness to accept the good with the bad.
WHAT’S NOT
The swearing, sexual content and detailed lesbian references just get in the way of the story, and make it inaccessible to anyone under 18.
SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING
You’re also likely to be offended if you hold to a traditional view of marriage and relationship. However it does have one things going for it spiritually speaking: messing around on your partner is immature. That said, since it so strongly affirms that, ‘the heart goes where the heart goes’, it works as a free pass to do even that.
