Book review: You are free: Be who you already are - Rebekah Lyons
Book review: You are free: Be who you already are - Rebekah Lyons
14 October 2017
“What a gift: to be free to set free.” This is the premise of Rebekah Lyons’ second book, You are free: Be who you already are, which will appeal to female, Christian readers. Her focus is not how we receive freedom in Christ, but how we walk in it as his followers.
There are no formulaic answers, but each chapter ends with questions for the reader to reflect upon. Lyons’ writing style is conversational and firmly grounded in Scripture. She is humble in sharing her deepest struggles, including panic attacks, her desire for approval and the joys and griefs of parenting a child with Down syndrome.
The references to American culture may grate on some Australian readers, but the themes are universal. Chapter headings include: Free to rest, Free to grieve and Free to love.
Lyons shares many of her own life experiences, which lend credibility to her conviction that, “Confession is the gateway to healing.” As she acknowledged and named her struggles before God, she received courage to confront her fears and healing to relinquish them.
I appreciated her emphasis that the gift of freedom is not for our benefit alone; it is to be shared with others, as she says, “When I asked Jesus to trade my anxiety for peace, I learned to extend peace to others. When I asked him to restore my joy, I brought laughter to others.”
If you are a Christian living with anxiety or striving for the approval of God and others, this book will be a useful guide on your journey of healing. Additional resources are also available to supplement this book, including an e-book, a study guide and a DVD study.
You Are Free is available at Koorong for $16.99.
